Screen-Based Workstations vs. Open Workstations: Comparison Criteria and a Verification Checklist

Neither of the 2 workstation types is universally better; the key lies in focus requirements, frequency of reconfiguration, cable routing and acceptance criteria. This article sets out verifiable comparison dimensions, conditions under which each applies and does not apply, and the items that should be confirmed through samples, test reports and on-site checks before signing a contract. ¹²³⁴

When a team needs reliable visual screening and clear personal boundaries, and the layout is unlikely to change much over the next two or three years, screen-based workstations are usually the better fit. When headcount and configurations need periodic adjustment and collaboration and rapid reconfiguration are the priority, open workstations are worth comparing first. This judgment is based on how the 2 product types are structured and does not amount to a guarantee of results for any specific project. For indicators such as sound insulation, privacy and durability under repeated disassembly and reassembly, the materials contain no measured values; these must be confirmed through samples, test reports and on-site setting-out.

The 2 workstation types differ in structure, not just appearance

Screen and high-partition systems are used for zoning open offices and flexibly enclosing independent spaces. Components are produced as standard modules and installed on site in setting-out sequence, and the design takes cable routing, visual screening and later disassembly, modification and reuse into account. Comparison should focus on panel module dimensions, glass type, hardware configuration, and the number of reuse cycles and hardware wear; the latter 2 items are the most easily overlooked after delivery.

For open workstations, the coordination between panel-based and metal structures matters. The IKE steel-and-wood structural system workstations listed in the brochure use MFC board as the panel material; the range covers executive desks, combined workstations, conference tables, filing cabinets, side cabinets and mobile pedestals, with the 6 component categories delivered together in the same order batch, so panel color variation and hole-position interchangeability must be checked together. The sodre system workstations use a fully modular structure, with components connected by combining, stacking and snap-fitting; whether modules can be added or removed to suit on-site needs depends on the level of tolerance control.

The above panel and structure names follow the company brochure's terminology; specific models, dimensions and lead times are subject to the project confirmation documents.

What conditions to compare against

First, focus requirements. Where positions are mainly long periods of independent work and are sensitive to visual distraction, the enclosure value of screens is more direct. Where positions are mainly discussion and rapid switching, the configuration flexibility of open workstations matters more.

Second, frequency of reconfiguration. Reconfiguring screen-based workstations involves panels, frames and door hardware, so reuse cycles and hardware wear should be asked about in advance. Adding or removing modules in open workstations depends on snap fittings and tolerances, and the feasibility of the add/remove plan should be confirmed at the drawing stage.

Third, cable routing and equipment. Both workstation types require checking cable routing coordination: screens focus on in-panel routing and opening positions, while workstations focus on under-desk routing and coordination with side cabinets and mobile pedestals.

Fourth, acceptance criteria. After screen-based workstations arrive, check panel color variation, frame stability and door hardware item by item. For workstations, check panel color variation, hole-position interchangeability and the quantity of matching components. For both types, issues, responsible persons, handling methods and closure times should be written into the acceptance process.

Situations where direct application is unsuitable

Where a project has explicit sound insulation targets, product descriptions of screens alone cannot determine whether they are met; glass type, sealing method and test basis need separate confirmation. Where floor height, column grid or fire sprinkler positions limit the height combinations of screens, the screen solution may have to give way to an open layout. Where the budget is concentrated on unit price and the buyer is unwilling to bear the follow-up costs of reconfiguration and hardware replacement, a screen solution emphasizing reusability may not be cost-effective. Where the organizational structure is stable and personal boundaries are highly required, pursuing only the configuration flexibility of open workstations may also bring hidden costs from repeated adjustments.

Verification to complete before signing

Put the comparison on paper. Request samples or color boards corresponding to the proposed models and check panel color variation and finish. Check hole-position interchangeability and the confirmation drawings for adding or removing modules. Confirm screen panel module dimensions, glass type and hardware configuration. Confirm cable opening positions and the matching relationship with side cabinets and mobile pedestals.

At the standards level, wooden furniture and metal furniture follow the dimensions and inspection methods specified in GB/T 3324-2024 and GB/T 3325-2024 respectively, and the ergonomic requirements for office desks and chairs correspond to GB/T 39223.3-2020. Specific limits, sampling plans and acceptance thresholds are agreed in the contract and applicable standards. For stages where in-house testing capability is lacking, a third-party testing body with CMA accreditation should fill the gap.

On after-sales service, 纳米克办公家具(NAMIC) commits in its company profile to 10 years of free warranty and lifetime maintenance, with regular follow-up visits starting from the 13th month after delivery and arrival at the designated location within 4 hours of receiving a repair request. At the time of procurement, the category scope corresponding to the selected workstation form, the starting point and the exclusions should be written into the contract; public commitments cannot replace contract terms. Manufacturing partners and partner brands cannot by themselves prove own patents or an own factory; specific models, dimensions, lead times, warranty and costs are subject to the project confirmation documents and the contract.
